How to Paint Everything: Marvel Crisis Protocol - Spider-Ham

by brushwizard | Nov 10 2025

Hey everybody, welcome back to another How to Paint Everything: Marvel Crisis Protocol! Today I am going to go over how I painted the Spectacular Spider-Ham, Peter Porker! For this one, I wanted to try to capture a more comic book or cartoony vibe in the paint job. To accomplish this, I used pointillism and brighter colors as well as solid blacks. This gives lets him stand out on the table, and sets him apart from the other Crisis Protocol characters in my Web Warriors roster. Since he feels slightly out of place, it matches well with him being a living cartoon in the real world.

All of the main surfaces were painted with a bright color, then using dots of paint from the tip of my brush, I added shadows and highlights, combining dots into larger flat colors. Then to finish it off I used solid black lines and dots to help sell the comic book printing look. It was a very interesting challenge, and I'm very pleased with the end results.

Below you'll find a handy paint chart showing all of the colors that were used on Spider-Ham. So, let's get into it!

Blue Suit Areas

Basecoat - Citadel Teclis Blue Light Blue Highlight Dots - Citadel Lothern Blue Very Light Blue Highlight Dots - Citadel Baharroth Blue Highlight Dots - AK Interactive White Dark Blue Shadow Dots - Citadel Kantor Blue Shadows & Shadow Dots - Vallejo Model Color Black

The blue areas of his suit were painted with a basecoat of Teclis Blue. This is normally one of my highlight colors that I would use on my blue superhero costumes. Since we are aiming for a brighter look, it will act nicely as a base. I then started highlighting the blue with dots of Lothern Blue, continuing to add dots until I was happy with the highlight areas. The final blue highlight was done with Baharroth Blue, leaving some of the Lothern Blue showing, and the highlight as then finished off with White dots.

The shadows were created by adding dots of Kantor Blue to any areas that would be in shadow. I kept adding dots into the recesses until I was happy with coverage. Finally, I added Black dots to the deepest recesses and the darkest areas, as well as any edges that met the red sections of the suit.

Red Suit Areas

Basecoat - Army Painter Angelic Red Light Orange Highlight Dots - Citadel Fire Dragon Bright White Highlight Dots - AK Interactive White Dark Red Shadow Dots - Citadel Evil Sunz Scarlet Darker Red Shadow Dots - Cidadel Mephiston Red Shadows, Web Lines and Shadow Dots - Vallejo Model Color Black Black Highlights

The basecoat was painted using Angelic Red, which is a wholly different red than is normally used on my Spider-Man characters. The red was then highlighted in the same fashion as the blue areas, using Fire Dragon Bright. A final highlight on these areas was done with White. The shadows were then painted using dots of Evil Sunz Scarlet and Mephiston Red. Finally, the deepest recesses, shadowed areas, web lining and chest emblem were all painted Black. I did highlight the spider logo with a bit of White as well.

Eye Lenses

Basecoat - Citadel Adminstratum Grey Highlight Dots - AK Interactive White

His eyes and the little eyes on his snout were painted Adminstratum Grey and then highlighted with dots of White.

Outrageously Sized Cartoon Hammer

Basecoat - Citadel Mournfang Brown: Citadel Fire Dragon Bright Shadows - Citadel Mournfang Brown: Citadel Rhinox Hide Highlights - Citadel Mournfang Brown Highlights - Citadel XV-88: AK Interactive Ivory Darklining - Vallejo Model Color Black

Spider-Ham's hammer started with a basecoat of Mournfang Brown mixed with Fire Dragon Bright. I then mixed Mournfang Brown and Rhinox Hide and painted that into the shadows. I highlighted it up with Mournfang Brown, and then XV-88 mixed with Ivory. To add some texture to it, I added lines of black to the wood to give it some cartoony vibes.

WHACK! Text

Basecoat - AK Interactive White Top Lettering Color - Army Painter Lava Orange Middle Lettering Color - Army Painter Warped Yellow Bottom Lettering Color - AK Interactive White Lettering Outline - Army Painter Angelic Red

As an optional add-on, you can add sound effect text to his base, similarly to Deadpool and Nightcrawler. For this text, I painted the entire thing White. I then split it into thirds. The upper third was painted Lava Orange, the middle third was painted Warped Yellow and the bottom third was left White. Once I was happy with the transitions between the colors, I gave it a border of Angelic Red

Explosion

Basecoat - AK Interactive White Layer - Army Painter Warped Yellow: AK Interactive Ink Fluorescent Yellow Layer – Army Painter Warped Yellow: AK Interactive Ink Fluorescent Orange

I kept the explosion effect relatively simple. This time I only went with yellow and orange for it. I started with a basecoat of Warped Yellow mixed with Fluorescent Yellow Ink. While it was still wet, I painted another layer of Warped Yellow mixed with Fluorescent Orange Ink. After letting it dry, I went back and forth with both mixes until I was happy with the look of it.

Concrete Basing

Basecoat - Citadel Stormvermin Fur Stipple - Citadel Adminstratum Grey Stipple - Citadel Ulthuan Grey Wash - Citadel Nuln Oil

My go-to for Crisis Protocol basing is a simple Concrete recipe. It starts with a basecoat of Stormvermin Fur. I then stipple the surface with an old brush, using Administratum Grey and Ulthuan Grey. To finish it off, the entire area is given a wash of Nuln Oil.

That does it for Spider-Ham! He's ready to unleash some Spider-Nonsense on the table! Will he take the place of Toad in my Web Warriors roster? I guess time will tell. He was pretty fun, when I got him to the table though and I'm interested in getting more game time with him soon.
