Competitive Innovations in 10th: Corsairs are Red

by James "One_Wing" Grover | Feb 18 2026

Welcome to Competitive Innovations, our weekly feature for a number of game lines across the tabletop wargame space. Each week our army list and tactics experts canvass the top tournaments for their game of specialty, looking at the week’s top match-ups and how they played out on the tabletop to let you know what’s hot, what’s not, and what might be coming next as the competitive meta evolves year-round.

We have an unusually quiet weekend for the middle of February, and it turns out to be because 40k players have a stereotype-busting level of respect for the importance of Valentine's day. That's probably good news for anyone who's given their heart to the C'tan, because one fewer week of meaningful data means a higher chance of them skating to the next normal balance update untouched. We still have enough events to fill out one part, so you've just got me this week, presumably normal service resuming next time!

Edit: OK it wasn't as quiet as we first thought - we've had a triple threat of events running on non-BCP apps and events finishing on Monday that meant things weren't all in the system when I did my normal processing run. Readers are left to imagine how mad I got when I discovered a whole extra major in our tracker when I went to check some win rate stats as colour for what I thought was the last event. Enjoy a seven-event special!

Anti-C'tan Wrath

Thoughts

Unsurprisingly, the star gods are warping list design as much as they do reality, and you see that in this Wrath list. All the classic pieces are here, but in the flex slots the list pivots away from generalist firepower towards a full Eradicator brick to smoke any C'tan they see, and the Deathwing Knights are built for maximum output via the power weapon/Chaplain combo - so they still wound on 4s, but have more attacks, and also always-on mortal protection. That helps an always grindy list pull off the grind plan even against the toughest stuff, and Pajak picked up two wins into Necrons on the way to the trophy, congratulations!

Thoughts

Over in Necron land, iteration is mostly focused on picking a potential weakness of the list and trying to close it off. Pantheon's key threats are short ranged, so one of the ways it can lose is if something like Ultramarines or some Grizzled builds can pop consecutive C'tan with stuff that wildly outranges them. Adding two Doomsdays to the Pantheon setup should make the "consecutive" part of that plan a lot less reliable, as you can put some pretty severe punishment on the popular hulls people use for that with a few volleys. Seems to have worked well here, as Andre took two big wins against Ultramarines early on. Great stuff.

Thoughts

The other option for dealing with a very skewed metagame is the "C'tan aren't real and can't hurt me" plan. Build to crush everything else, particularly the predators of the top builds, and hope you don't run into the dominant strategy too many times (or hope that it's in the hands of someone being carried by it who you can outscore). That looks to be the plan here, as this list can't super kill more than one C'tan, but will turn some of the horde builds people are using against them into a fine mist, and has mobility and threat density to take on most mid-weight lists. Against the Necron menace, the heavier than usual Piranha contingent gives the list the legs to try and spike one C'tan straight off the table with massed seeker missiles and melta, and then has enough speedy ways to put 4 OC on a point to hopefully lock in the game from there. I wouldn't want to play five rounds against Necrons with it, because at some point that initial volley will spike down, but it's a solid enough plan to try and play the odd game into it, and the performance against many other lists is stellar. I do like the use of Piranhas as a tool to try and close the gap, it seems like a smart adaptation, well done to Akadera.

Thoughts

Another Dark Angels build in fourth place, here hurling nasty melee straight at the foe, relying on the Inner Circle Companion units to provide broad enough output to handle anything, and then bringing a couple of Lancers to play the game of sitting miles from C'tan scaring them every turn. Not wildly complex, but very brutal and a challenge for many armies to race thanks to the sheer pressure of a Deathwing bow wave. Well done to Grzelich.

The Best of the Rest

As ever with pure 20-0 this is chaos mode, but the lowest ranked player who scored 4-1 or better was in 15th (they in fact went 5-0, as mentioned up top) so that's where we're cutting it:
  • 5th - Wiśnia - Astra Militarum (Grizzled Company): Classic Grizzled with double Dorn, double Kasrkin and a Bullgryn unit, plus a large Cadian squad with a Castellan for the occasional high-volume go-off.
  • 6th - Behemoth - Ultramarines (Blade of Ultramar): Bobby G Blade Hulltramarines.
  • 7th - TommyRelax - Imperial Knights (Spearhead-At-Arms): A Castigator and a Mentor's Pride Warden bossing round lots of Helverins, a few Warglaives and some Sisters with an Immolator for the vital (in this build) Ignores Cover setup.
  • 8th - Marcin - Adeptus Custodes (Talons of the Emperor): Talons Raider/Guard spam with a few of the normal guard shaved out to fit a full axe Terminator/Captain squad to beat up C'tan.
  • 9th - Khanrad - Necrons (Canoptek Court): Triple C'tan, triple Doomstalker, one Wraith unit.
  • 10th - Niltag - Necrons (Starshatter Arsenal): Silent King, triple Doomsdays, double Stalker and the Void Dragon.
  • 11th - Manfred - Emperor's Children (Court of the Phoenician): Fulgrim, Infantry in Rhinos and a big Flawless Blade unit.
  • 12th - Egatrot - Leagues of Votann (Hearthband): Double big Hearthguard brick with a third unit in a fort, plus various supporting tools including double Arkanyst.
  • 13th - AVJ - Necrons (Canoptek Court): Another notch for triple C'tan, triple Doomstalker, single Wraiths.
  • 14th - Ketchup - Tyranids (Subterranean Assault): Tunnelling Monsters (including a Norn) and some extra Genestealers for early pressure.
  • 15th - Łukasz Szulc - Ultramarines (Blade of Ultramar): Calgar Hulltramarines with a big Victrix unit and some Repexes.

Thoughts

Saga of the Great Wolf gets a showing here, combining some of the standard Space Wolf herohammer/pressure pieces with a big Blood Claw unit that enjoys access to Lethal Hits, and a trio of C'tan-hunting tanks that can tee up a nasty shooting turn when you pop +1BS, extra valuable with the redeploys from the Iron Priest's Enhancement. To beat C'tan, you really do want to be maximising your chance of popping one with relative impunity, which is why we're seeing less common Marine setups that have ways of executing on that rising in prominence (and we'll see another example of that later). Congratulations Андрей!

Full send Berzerker Warband in undefeated second place, leaning on a full Berzerker unit to hold the line against heavy hitters with the -1D Stratagem. The big brick is a nice overwhelming tool into enemy hull builds as well, and pure aggression will always give you a decent shot of winning games when it's attached to relatively durable models. Good job Alexander.

Thoughts

A moderate blast from the past in third, going back to the time honoured Chaos Space Marine tradition of putting the nastiest stuff possible in Rhinos and backing them with Predators. The ratchet of quality we always see through editions has left it looking a little bit less exciting than it once was, but it's still a very solid all-rounder setup, and having a Ruinous Raid go turn with Chosen is a pretty uniquely nasty high output trick for some foes to worry about. Great work Илья on using the classics.

Castigator Martyrs

Thoughts

All-rounder-ish Martyrs takes the fourth slot here, shaking up the normal builds a little by adding back in three Castigators. I think that's broadly just sensible in the current heavy-hitting metagame; the more stuff you can have in your corner that flattens the enemy and doesn't die to a stiff breeze the better. Also always a fan of the murder jump Canoness with Zephyrim, feels like something you want in every Martyrs list! Well done Daniil.

Awakened Silent King C'tan

Thoughts

Oh hey, I (mostly) know that list. Awakened herohammer plus C'tan is a match made in heaven (or hell for your opponents) as it gives you a huge toolbox of stuff you can operate with that's very hard to deal with efficiently. Your opponent can probably stop one of your Wraiths, C'tan or Characters, but you'll have the other two left to wreck them. This particular version takes the Silent King instead of a third C'tan, which is another way to help with the ranged issue; you still don't have a lot of long-ranged firepower, but the King's few shots are so reliable that it still forces some caution. The re-roll 1s aura is also great for helping the Nightbringer and Ammentar really reliably sing up close. You all know this stuff - this list is an unholy terror, and I'm still very much dying on my hill that Awakened C'tan is better than Pantheon, particularly for tougher games. Congratulations Lasse.

Shadow Legion Madness

Thoughts

Something wildly out of left field in second place, an ultra-unique Shadow Legion build that's very much targeting the plan of out-scoring C'tan (and really, anyone). Nurglings and Plaguebearers combine to push foes back and sticky the mid-board with high OC stuff on it, and while the metagame can definitely kill some of these units, taking them down in this volume isn't always feasible, and C'tan will certainy struggle with it. In addition, the list has a great tool for pushing back against the kind of volume pieces that can handle hordes, which is the Fade Chosen unit. I'm going to be honest that I didn't even know you could take Fade on a CSM Character, but it rocks in this setup - the unit Ingresses, rocks in with Channeled Wrath, flenses something to death and then leaves, rinse and repeat. That's super good for handling targets that even a Bloodthirster might struggle with. You've even got Exalted Flamers as a tool to slow stuff like Deathwing Knights down as they try and wade through the mess. This is so different to anything else we've seen recently, and exactly the kind of thing I had in mind when first starting this column, congratulations to Bjørn for finding something completely new!

Thoughts

This...this is one of those games that is going to be an extremely violent and probably quite brief mess, because the Tyranids list here is very much built for outscoring foes that can't swiftly deal with hordes, not squaring up against a World Eaters list that could have a solid try at evaporating all 80 Termagants in a single turn if allowed to. The Berzerkers can obviously pick up a squad (or maybe two if they're allowed to multi-connect since Kharn's here), the Eightbound are kind of wasted on it but will still do the job, and the Helbrutes are a gigantic issue, because their ability to rampage forward with multiple Fights (and maybe Unrelenting Advance) makes it much harder for the Tyranids to try and play this by gradually feeding stuff out.

The Transports in the World Eaters are a major contributor as well, because they ensure that neither of the alpha Infantry units will have a Genestealer accident, and the sheer size of the Land Raider is a big asset here too - if it can park bodily on an objective the Tyranids can't stop them Marines scoring without committing, and anything they commit will become a fine mist, with the culprits quickly retreating to a Rhino.

The presence of triple Exocrine provides a small out for the Tyranids, because those sometimes really pop off and I guess if they spiked the Land Raider (or one just lifted a whole squad of Exalted Eightbound the first time they deployed) there could be a game here, but I think it's slim pickings for the Tyranids (especially as a WE Raider is insultingly more likely to spike an Exocrine back than a normal one is). The map doesn't help by ensuring the armies crash into each other all across the mid-board, which is delightful for the World Eaters while badly overstretching the Tyranid damage dealers. I think the only other thing I'd try as the Tyranids is being very conservative with the Genestealers - save them to be a pure counter-charge threat rather than bothering to infiltrate at all, being nearer to the World Eaters is fully not going to help here, and if you really want something for that (or to block Scouts), use a Neurolictor. The basic problem is that nothing about this game forces the World Eaters to do anything beyond their exact favoured game plan - stage up turn one, lift most of the enemy army turn two. Given that, not hugely surprised by the result.

Goretrack

Thoughts

World Eaters trundle to victory here, and I think Goretrack is a strong choice in the current metagame. To beat Necrons with World Eaters it is 1000% imperative that your big Exalted unit connect with a C'tan unscathed, and putting them in a Land Raider is the best way to accomplish that. The range of tricks you can do with the Berzerker Rhino and the solid reach/trade-up potential of the Helbrutes all help, too - if you can sweep the legs of anything in a heavy hitter build that isn't the core pieces and smash up one priority target with the Exalted, you're in a great spot to win most games. If you have always dreamed of crushing foes under the angriest Land Raider out there, now's an ideal time to try it out!

Thoughts

A re-appearence of a slightly more noble and less furious Blood Angels build here, balancing skirmishing melee herohammer from the Captain/Sanguinary units with punishing anti-heavy firepower from the Vindicators and Devastators. The Inheritors trick of being able to just stand Devastators in the open blasting away is honestly better than ever right now, and the list doubles up on that capability with Draxus joining Heavy Intercessor, which doubles as a good answer to various herohammer builds. Stacking that up with triple Vindicator means that even the toughest targets do have to seriously respect you, and the list rounds out nicely with the Sanguinor to punish enemy melee plans. Rage-Cursed is getting all the headlines, but there's some really nice stuff going on here, worth a second look if you like a more flexible game plan, congratulations Jaden.

Full Send Hull Bringers

Thoughts

Our next list is the ultimate countermeasure for any other monster or hull builds, and is broadly Pantheon's worst nightmare. Massive amounts of high-quality melta firepower on hulls that can pop Miracle Dice to absorb one more big C'tan swing than you'd like is exactly what C'tan fear the most, and it'll do a solid double duty sweeping Ultramarines or Guard tanks off the board too. Even hordes trouble it less than some other hull-heavy builds because of the Castigators, which put out a solid clip and have the autocannons here to maximise their sweeping potential. I was, bluntly, very surprised by how rapidly this build dropped out of favour post- the last Dataslate when it had been top tier before and didn't get hit that hard, so I'm not surprised to see it get a bit of air time now that smoking two C'tan in a turn (which it can and will do) is an instant win button in many games. Congratulations to Thierry.

The Best of the Rest

There were 4 more players on 4-1 records. They were:
  • 2nd - Shannon McLeod - Necrons (Pantheon of Woe): Triple C'tan, a big Warrior brick and lots of Ophydians/lone Destroyers. Interestingly the Warrior unit is running with a Technomancer and Szeras instead of Orikan, which I think is pretty defensible if you have C'tan to draw the big guns.
  • 3rd - Matt McAdoo - Imperial Knights (Questoris Companions): Five bigs, featuring one of every Cerastus (even the oft-maligned Acheron), and doubling up on Lancers.
  • 4th - Henry Ban - Ultramarines (Ironstorm Spearhead): Bobby G and a bunch of Speeders, Ballistus and Vindicators.
  • 5th - Jason Matheson - Dark Angels (Wrath of the Rock): The Lion, Deathwing Knights, and some tanks.

Big Game Hunting Knights

Thoughts

Finishing up today's showcase of how C'tan shift everything we've got Imperial Knights, currently closing the gap on their infernal brethren because they have better tooling for hunting C'tan. I imagine firing a Wyrmslayer Divination Castellan at the Nightbringer is one of the most satisfying things you can do in Warhammer right now, and amped-up Lancers is exactly what you want in between the Castellan and the C'tan. I also think this fairly balanced build is a better implementation of this plan than the all-in five big versions I've seen - it gives you more scope to capitalise on whatever hole you open up in the enemy's forces. Good stuff to close us out, congratulations Juan!

The Best of the Rest

There was 2 more players on 4-1 records. They were:
