ASOIAF The Miniatures Game: The Tattered Prince, from Hits and Crits

by CarlyCarv | Mar 24 2026

There is a new addition to the ASOIAF: The Miniatures Game in the form of a promo miniature. But this is not like other promo miniatures as it is made by the community for the community. Hits and Crits have gone on a journey hand in hand with the community to bring something new for players to enjoy. Introducing the new Neutral miniature; The Tattered Prince.

Hits and Crits

Hits and Crits is a content creation channel on YouTube, with a strong presence in the ASOIF: The Miniatures Game community. They are a cornerstone of Song helping to keep the ASOIAF-Stats website alive and having a large community on their discord channel. They mainly produce videos that range from insightful tips on how to start playing a faction, to in depth discussion on utilising rules to their full potential.

Hits and Crits have been known to run some competitions around designing your own Units and Commanders with the prizes being promo miniatures. These competitions have been a lot of fun as the community gets wacky in their designs. A firm favourite of mine is Commander Aeron Damphair with a rule where he crowns an attachment in your force the King of the Iron Islands.

The team decided to take the next step and create a miniature for a character that has not yet appeared in the game, and then use the competition to find the best rules for him designed by the community. They chose a mercenary commander from the story of ASOIAF, and one which could fit in most armies through the neutral allowance system. They choose The Prince of Tatters, the commander of the Windblown mercenary company.

The winners would see their rules become the main rules for this custom miniature and earn a promo miniature of their choice. I took part in this, and my NCU design came second, and thus I got myself the Vargo Hoat promo miniature, but also got one of the first Tattered Prince models.

Who is The Tattered Prince? - Lore

Westeros is where we spend most of our time in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, but we do occasionally take a trip over to Essos. One place we don't visit often is Pentos, although it does impact the story a little bit during the Dance of the Dragons as they send their navy to take on the Velaryons. Pentos is governed by the magisters of Pentos, and these people decide who will be the next prince of Pentos to rule over them. However, this honour is not one filled with long-lasting luxury, as the magisters sacrifice their prince if something goes wrong. The Tattered Prince was chosen to become the next prince but refused the offer and fled in fear he would be killed. The Tattered Prince became a sellsword of Essos travelling the Disputed lands and serving in many different mercenary companies before forming one of his own called the Windblown, and operated in Essos for the next 30 years. The Tattered Prince gets his name thanks to the strips of cloth that adorn his garments. These are torn from the clothes and banners of those he has felled, creating a ragged raiment. The Prince of Tatters enters the story in A Dance of Dragons where signs up with the enemies of Daenerys to take back control of Slaver’s Bay. However, he plays both sides so that he has a route to survival, and his only demand is Pentos. Some day, the Prince of Tatters will finally be a Prince of Pentos.

Box Contents

The Team at Hits and Crits have done an incredible job with the production value of this community promo miniature. The box and cards are made from a high-quality material, whilst they also sport some stunning graphic design to make it look just as good as the other promo miniatures that CMON has made for the game.

Alongside this is a 3D-Printed miniature holder for The Tattered Prince that displays the 3D-Printed model securely in the box. It also holds the cards for playing with the model in your games as well as a little booklet showing off some spectacular paint jobs by talented painters in the community, a blurb about Tatters, and the credits to all the people involved in the making of this model.

The model was sculpted by Wolf Kaulen of Wolf Miniatures, and it is incredible how seamlessly the model matches the rest of the miniatures in the game. I would even go as far to say it out matches a lot of the sculpts currently available. I did have a problem with the hilt of the sword being very weak causing a lot of broken parts when accidentally dropped. I even lost a part completely and had to convert up a new handle; something to watch out for if you get your own.

The entire project is a stellar achievement from start to finish. The only downside to the whole piece is the AI artwork used for the box and the cards. With context, the Hits and Crits team do not have a wealth of resources to be able to afford a concept artist, but it still sucks that they resorted to AI art rather than human art. The images of the painted models in the booklet go far beyond the AI art and I would have argued for them to be used in place of the art they went with.

That being said, everything about this project is above and beyond what you might have expected from a custom community created promo piece. The entire team should be very proud of their accomplishments, and if this is a sign of what’s to come from the team, then we all should be very excited.

The Tattered Prince – Commander of the Windblown

The choice of a foot commander is a wise choice to open up more playability from this miniature, and it also makes it less daunting considering this is their first foray into making a miniature. However, I would have preferred to see a cavalry or NCU commander version of him since he is described as being commanding from the back or his warhorse sporting the same ragged tatters as him, or a political version since a lot of what he does in the story is through diplomacy.

But I am so nitpicky about representing models on the tabletop relating to how they are written. I have the same gripes with Addam Marbrand who should have been the Lannister cavalry commander. A foot commander opens up more ways to use the model which is far better for the game as a whole.

Rags and Tatters (Ability) - This ability allows Tatters to work in any neutral unit since it boosts their combat capabilities. It works better in one that already has morale modifiers such as any of the Bolton forces. I can see him working well inside of the Bolton Cutthroats, but if you have a few points to spend, then why not throw him into the Bolton Bastard’s Girls? He is an aggressive commander after all. The morale focus here relates to him being intimidating on the battlefield due to the reputation of the ragged raiment. Enmity and Unease (Ability) - There really aren't many abilities like this one, with the closest being Knightly Vow due to it targeting a unit for some reroll charges. This causes some debuffs that work well in some certain circumstances. The -1 to morale again works well with Bolton forces, with the -1 to hit working well almost anywhere, but works even better when Bloody Mummer Skirmishers and Bolton Blackguard are getting into combat. Overall, I think this is a decent commander in the game, but a fantastic commander in the neutral faction especially since one just comes with a keyword and that’s it. I do think he isn’t as good as the attachment version or the NCU version, but he does come with some tactics cards which could change my mind.

Windblown Advantage (Tactics Card) - This is a two option card with one option far stronger than the other. Reroll charges are nice but you will rarely use it especially since it is before rolling. I think more players will use it for the combat bonuses. Vicious could work well on Tatters if he is not in a Bolton unit, giving you more options to play with, however, I would be using this on the cavalry options since they all hit hard already and could all benefit from the options. Cavalry works well here.

Battlefield Colours (Tactics Card) - Neutrals used to have a big problem with morale since 7+ is a death sentence and most of their options have this morale value as standard. But recently there have been tweaks to this and there are cards to reroll or auto pass. However, you don’t want to waste these cards on cheap 5pts units even though you would like to shorten up a weakness. This card fixes that, especially for Tatters’ unit. Bolton Cutthroats would be perfect for this card and we have already mentioned them as a good option for Tatters. A very useful card to keep Neutrals in the game for longer.

Tattered and Twisty (Tactics Card) – Golden Company Elephants. This will be something that will come up with the NCU later, but the Assault Orders nerf meant that most sources of free attacks in exchange for a Tactics Zone are done at the lowest dice value. However, there is no negative change if it is used on a unit that sees little to no difference to the amount of dice; like a solo unit such as the Golden Company Elephant.

Outside of the Elephant I can see it working with cavalry for the same reasons due to the lowest amount being better than infantry in most cases. Stormcrow Dervishes have some play since Swift Strike means they can use the insane movement to keep out of harm's way or flank the opposing unit, whilst their action remains unused. Attachments that get bonuses every time they fight should also be considered like Vargo or Arya since you can kill an attachment every time they attack. This could even spill over into Bolton Cutthroats since they get benefits when they attack unactivated units. There is a lot of potential with this card. I don’t know if you would be using it for the free maneuver since you may lose some value, but that could be a crucial action. On top of that, Tatters may see some use out of it for threat range since he gets an auto 6 on the charge. You would have to keep a wide birth from Tatters in this instance.

Overall, I think this is an interesting enough commander to play but will need to test out to see where he lands in the pecking order. At first glance I do not believe he is better than Daario, but is certainly better than most of the rest. The problem is he is kind of competing with Daario for the aggressive option when you are picking your two lists. I like to have one aggressive and one control, so I would have to make a choice about ditching my beloved Daario.

The Tattered Prince - NCU Card - By Hits and Crits

The Prince of Promises - NCU

For 5pts, NCU Tatters feels worth it. His influence ability is pretty incredible especially if you combine it with Jaqen H’gar to have two on the table at one time. An extra attack since almost any unit is strong, but you can follow this up with added morale or movement. I am looking at Hedge Knights with 8 dice, 6 move, and then use Daario’s Reckless Strikes, or Stormcrow Dervishes in the same instance with 8 dice, 7 move, Reckless Strikes, and whatever attachment you have gone with. But these are purely Neutral options. Outside of Neutrals you only get one buff which weakens it massively, however this can have some potential with 9 dice on Dreadfort Flayed Men, or lance cavalry restoring their nerfed dice stats. But, on top of this, for both sides, you get a free charge action at lowest dice if you take the coin zone on the tactics board. Essentially a free Assault Orders which is very good. Especially with Golden Company Elephants or any other solo in the game. NCU Tatters is far better in Neutrals and is practically an auto take. Outside of it you may have some reservations but he can still impact the game as a whole. The only thing that would stop me from bringing him in Neutral is if I don’t have the points to squeeze him in.

The Tattered Prince - Attachment Card - By Hits and Crits

Colourful Tactician - Attachment

Collecting Tatters - This rule is fluffy, and should come into play a few times to be impactful. I can see him having more play with characters that utilize the tokens, such as Boltons looking for panicked tokens, or Lannisters with their Casterly Rock Honour Guard. In Neutrals you gain early momentum with this ability, with it spiralling from successful combats. Daario can get a lot of weakened tokens out so this could add on to that style of play. It really works anywhere with no unit truly shining the most.

Superior Tactician - This rule is the main strength of this attachment. The best players in the UK scene have talked about how the ability Tactical Reposition can win games, and that is a 3” shift for a unit in short range, whereas this can give you a pivot and it can be on a unit in long range. It's nice to get access to this in Neutrals, but I can see a lot of people taking him outside of Neutrals too. It's really helpful for ranged units for example, or countering enemy cavalry.

Another thing to note is that Tatters can count towards the free attachment points, making it even more likely to be included since there is no penalty outside of Neutrals to taking him. It doesn’t use up points or count towards Neutral amounts since he would be for free.

Windblown Mercenaries - Unit Card - By Boardmangaming

Boardmangaming’s Windblown

Hits and Crits aren’t the only ones creating their own rules for the ASOIAF game, and Boardmangaming has been doing it for years. You may have heard of the homebrew House Arryn faction which was designed by Boardmangaming, he has followed this up with a Ghiscari faction, or the enemies of Daenerys in Slaver’s Bay. He created some awesome Windblown units and characters you can use alongside Tatters, and you can check them out here. In fact I will be doing just that at a future narrative event in May. Tatters will be taking the field with the Windblown as we have taken on a new contract with only one demand; Pentos.

Hits and Crits will have more information about getting your hands on your own Tattered Prince in the future so I would recommend joining their discord community or subscribing to them on YouTube, as this will be where they will reveal some more information over time.
