Welcome back, Dear Reader, to my ongoing hobby and competitive progress series for 2025.
Previously on Road Through 2025, I was doing more hobby work and testing a terminator-heavy Thousand Sons list. This week I'm finally in the final prep for the Challengers Cup and heading to Salt Lake City for the event.
In fact, as I write this, I'm currently in the house we've rented ahead of the team - we've rented a pair of joined houses for the weekend with a host of beds in order to house our team of weirdoes. And I'm here by myself at the moment, because well, planning 8-man teams events really sucks. This is my second of the year, and the second time I've had to make last-minute adjustments to the roster. Last time around it was replacing Chase "Gunum" Garber and Ben Cherwien; this time around it was four replacements. First it was Liam "Corrode" Royle and James "One_Wing" Grover, who were going to come out a few days early to do some hiking and regular vacation stuff. Then they decided travel to the US wasn't in the cards this year which, fair, but meant we had to replace them. Then it was Chase, who had the same issue that sidelined him from Ottawa, and then for the last few weeks I've been trying to replace Scott Horras, who can't play in the final round.
It has not been my favorite experience, to say the least, and because I bought the tickets early, I'm now the only one at the house, waiting for everyone to get here.
The good news is, it's a pretty nice house. Or pair of houses.
The Team
I've talked about these guys, but it's worth going back over them in detail. Note that the event had a team vote last week, and we voted to use the new balance update and drop Challenger cards from the event. This was the right call, even if it means lists were finalized late.

Army: Death Guard
It's me! I'm back on my Death Guard bullshit, running Mortarion's Hammer again in a teams environment. It's the same list I've been running for weeks now, and the same list I ran at the Tabled Talk GT earlier this month. I think they're still a great army, and post-dataslate very much have the power to beat most lists.

James "Boon" Kelling
Army: Aeldari
James is also back on his Elf Bullshit, but buoyed a bit by point drops to several key units in the recent balance update. The big difference this time around is that James is no longer running Seer Council and instead running Aspect Warhost, with a list that's quite a bit more versatile than the one he ran in Ottawa. I expect he'll win more games this time.

On top of this, a local Orks player is subbing in for Scott in round 6 when he has to fly back early to make an early Monday morning work obligation.
That's a very solid team, and by Stat-Check's Elo, we're firmly in the middle of the pack, ranking 16th out of the 32 teams at the event. I'm personally hoping we can finish somewhere around 3-3 over the six rounds we'll play, but I'm also just happy to be hanging out with the guys, playing Warhammer. I packed up and flew out to the house on Tuesday ahead of everyone else and I've been mostly working remotely and enjoying the place. It's not a bad house - there's a hot tub and the grill is solid - and checking out the local area. It's not amazing, but there's a grocery store and a number of places to eat nearby, even if most are fast food. It's mostly a highway, but there's some pretty terrain behind it.
My plan the first two days has been to eat cereal and sandwiches for breakfast and lunch and then go out for dinner and grab something hot. Today it was at a joint called Cubby's, which serves a solid bowl of rice and beans and other stuff. But starting Thursday it'll be family-style cooked meals using the grills at the houses. My current plan looks something like:
Thursday
- Burgers and Dogs
- Chips
Friday
- BBQ Chicken
- Sausage
- Baked Beans
- Salad/Vegetable TBD
Saturday
- Steaks
- Mashed potatoes
- Asparagus
- Mushrooms
Sunday
- Steak + Chicken Fajitas
- Rice + Beans
Cooking big meals can be a lot of work, but the grills help and doing big family style meals will both save us all money and generally be more satisfying than just ordering a bunch of pizza. Also, i personally love doing the big meals like this. I like going to the grocery store at the start of a group vacation and buying all the supplies, like I'm the Quartermaster. Running around the grocery store, barking orders at people, saying shit like, "I need 22 steaks, two pounds of cheese, three loaves of bread, and four dozen eggs - MY BOYS GOTTA EAT."
Our Event Prep
I'm team captain this time around, a role I neither want nor am prepared for, but like I said - we're just here to have a good time this time around. I'm not particularly invested in winning and unlike Ottawa, our chances are much worse. Both because our team is not quite as good as that one and also because the competition is much, much tougher. I don't think winning the event is a super realistic goal for us, and so I'd rather focus on having a good time. That said, we did do some prep. The big thing was building a matrix. This is something Ben Jurek just talked about in his most recent Road to LVO article - you need to understand how your matchups look.
Here's the thing about matrices: They're kind of bullshit. Not as a general practice, but in more of the sense of they don't take into account player skill. I don't care how good the matchup is on paper, if I throw Campbell into John Lennon, he's going to lose that game barring some insane dice outcomes. He might not get 0-20'd, but he just doesn't have the experience and skill to translate that imbalance into a strong result. What I find the matrices do best is give you a "vibe check" on the matchup. A strong score usually says to me that "this person has played this matchup and is confident they could win it." And that's all I'm looking for at this level of play. In that sense, elo scores matter more to me than army matchups as well, because knowing where our team is just outmatched is helpful.
Note: We use scores 1-5 instead of 0-20. I like this more because it feels more like a range and 0-20 would be too scientific for this crowd.
When I built the matrix, I started by having the team fill it in, but I also looked at their most recent tournament games - many of them went to NOVA - and used those scores to fill in scores as well. This gave me a pretty good matrix, but also one that feels wildly optimistic - but this is a problem which i think a lot of player matrices will have. When you build a team of people who win 60-80% of their games, it's not out of the question for them to score all their games as 12+ wins, regardless of whether that's realistic. When I do pairings, I'll be looking for the 3s and 4s and trying to identify where someone has played a matchup before - having faced an army is ultimately the biggest factor in being able to beat them and play well in that matchup.
One other thing we did was set up a scrimm with one of the local Maryland teams who is going to be at the event. This was basically practicing pairings, going back and forth and looking at how we'd fare if we matched up. This was helpful, particularly for me to re-acquaint myself with pairings; I'm not great at it and I wasn't in charge of it at Ottawa. It's generally not something I want to put a lot of time and energy into. I enjoy being on a team and playing at a teams event but I definitely do not so much enjoy the metagame of the teams format or the tremendous hassle and bullshit of corralling an 8-player team.
That said I'll take a deeper look at our round 1 pairings today and build a plan for how we want to attack them.
Next Time: Challengers Cup Results
That does it for this week's update but come back next week when I'll be recapping the weekend's games and talking about what's next. With six games to play over the next three days and a lot of hangouts, I'm sure I'll have plenty to talk about.
Anyways, I'll see you next Thursday.
