On the surface it might seem like just another affiliation pack but with some extra toys. But it’s actually, in my opinion, one of the best things Atomic Mass Games have introduced for Marvel Crisis Protocol since release. And I don’t say that lightly!
Up until now if you wanted to introduce someone to the game, you had to jump through a few hoops. If it wasn’t already hard enough to line up schedules, bring enough models, tokens and dice for you to both share, design the perfect ‘my-first-game’ scenario and walk them through it all while trying to control your own dice spikes so as not to put them off immediately…you then had to convince them to fork out ~$130 for a Core Set.
Not only that, but you then have to explain that “it’s really good value for money…so long as you intend to play Avengers or Cabal!” Now while the Avengers are clearly the most mainstream and recognisable affiliation we have right in the game…and playing the baddies is cool “once you explain that Baron Zemo, a character most people barely know exists is usually a must-take in this game” - they don’t scratch the itch of every Marvel fan.
One of my favourite ways to sell people on this game is to ask them “Who is your favourite superhero?” Then, 99% of the time they’ll name someone that is in the game and you get to say, “Oh great! They’re in MCP and they’re awesome.” However, if their answer is a character that’s not one of the two Core Sets available right now, then you now have to convince them to jump over that expensive hurdle before they can get playing. But with the introduction of Starter Sets…this is no longer an issue!
Affiliation Packs have offered a great way for players to pick up a new team for the past couple of years. But Starter Sets now come with everything you need to start playing MCP. Rulers, a scoreboard, dice, tokens, a generous selection of the affiliation’s Team Tactics Cards and even Crisis Cards - all for the much more reasonable price of ~£70/$90.

Not only does this give you everything you need to start playing, but it also gives you a much more specific selection of characters based on the Marvel IP you’re most into. At the time of writing there are two Starter Sets available; X-Men and Spider-Foes. Two teams that I would argue are the next two most popular teams in mainstream media (not including Spider-man and friends) after the Avengers.
I can confidently say that these Starter Sets are now the best way to get into Marvel Crisis Protocol if you’re interested in the teams that are covered - and AMG have said that there will be more like this in the future.
They’re also a great purchase for existing players who want to expand their collection - as this is the best value for money on a per model level we’ve seen to date.

Now, let’s take a deep dive into the characters that make up the X-Men Starter Set specifically, and what kind of roster options they give you.
Note that at the time of writing; the Starter Sets are yet to hit shelves, meaning we don’t have access to all the new card art that they come with (which is also worth mentioning…there are lots of new and nice alternate art cards in these boxes). So some of the cards pictured in this article may appear different to what you get in the box, but fear not - everything in the box is the most up to date version of the characters (which when it comes to Uncanny X-Men…means they’ve been buffed since their first release).

Storm
Let’s get started with the two leaders. Storm and Cyclops. We’ve already written an article on how each of the Uncanny X-Men leaderships work which you can find here.
But allow me to give you the short version;
Storm likes to have opening set plays called ‘safe-grabs’ which essentially means her squad can pick-up Extracts in Round 1 and then move back to relative safety.
Storm likes a team that wins by scoring out quicker than your opponent can.
Storm herself likes to stay at range, hiding from enemy attacks with Goddess Of Storms and occasionally throwing enemies off Secures with Tempest.
Storm is widely considered to be the most competitively viable of the Uncanny X-Men leaders.

Cyclops
Cyclops brings a more attrition focussed angle to Uncanny X-Men. His leadership rewards you with bonus power every time you damage an enemy.
Cyclops himself has extremely high potential thanks to the Speed of Sight trigger on his Optic Blast attack.
Field Leader is a very useful part of his kit as it can help move your team into position to lay down more attacks in the hopes of triggering the leadership more often.
Hit And Run helps to get Cyclops into the perfect position to attack more targets or move his team around to where he needs them.
I’d recommend playing Cyclops if you’re a fan of rolling lots of dice and making big risk, big reward plays.
You can read a more in-depth guide for Cyclops and Stormhere.

Wolverine
HERE HE IS! The big guy himself. Wolverine behaves pretty much how you’d expect him to in MCP. He chases targets and makes highly potent attacks from up close.
Wolverine pairs well with the Cyclops leadership as you can pass him 1 power in Round 1 which will allow him to charge someone standing on the midline thanks to The Best At What I Do - while counting Wilds in his attack roll as 2 successes.
Like Cyclops, Wolverine has a huge ceiling but doesn’t pull it off very reliably.
Healing Factor [2] is a big deal, especially with him having 7 health on his healthy side. If your opponent fails to finish him off, he will likely be able to hit them back harder and heal up some of the damage.
It’s worth noting that he loses some of his ability to score VPs on his injured side, so you mainly want to take Wolverine in a team that chooses violence over scoring.

Beast
Beast functions as a tanky, fast-moving, displacement machine.
His job is to pick-up an Extract and hold onto it, while also flipping pay-to-flip Secures thanks to his medium base + medium move. Beast is perfect in a Storm roster (I have played them together every single game for the past 4+ years). He brings everything she needs.
There is a To Me, My X-Men trick you can do with medium base models in Uncanny X-Men, but I’ll leave that for a more in-depth guide for another time. Stars And Garters is great, Disconcerting, Yet Provocative is great, Baser Instincts is awesome; Beast is just plain great.

Rogue
Rogue is what can primarily be referred to as a ‘tech piece’, meaning you can bring her into certain tricky match-ups and expect her to deal with the thing you’re most afraid of.
Southern Hospitality gives her a guaranteed Size 4 throw, perfect for throwing Hulk at his friends. Charge is very useful, especially under Cyclops or Magneto (oh yes, she’s affiliated to Brotherhood of Mutants too) where you can throw her an extra power to get it online in Round 1. Mutant Absorption can be crippling when used on the right model - and Kree-Mutant Physiology helps keep her around a little longer.

Gambit
Gambit is a lot of people’s new favourite model in MCP as he recently got a bit of a glow-up. The Cards Always Be In My Favor now lets him count Wilds as 2 successes on attacking, defending AND dodging. That’s a big deal.
Play Gambit if you like to gamble and roll a lot of dice. It’s not uncommon for a 52 Card Pickup to completely turn a game on its head thanks to a few too many Wilds being present. A Little Something Extra helps keep things a bit more consistent and predictable with Gambit. Plus Enhanced Agility it’s a seriously powerful ability, allowing Gambit to get out of trouble when he needs to.
You can view a more in-depth guide for Rogue and Gambithere.

And now…onto the Brotherhood of Mutants side of the Starter Set. That’s right! You don’t just get 1 awesome new affiliation to play with in this box…you get TWO!

Magneto
Magneto is widely seen as the best designed character in MCP. The unique feature of throwing terrain in this game is what makes it really catch the eyes of onlookers in the local gaming store. Magneto really takes that up to 11.
His leadership From The Ruins… encourages his team to really disrespect their surroundings and start smashing up the place. It’s the best power generating leadership in the game, so long as the table is stacked with enough terrain to destroy (which it should be).
Reverse Polarity securely sits as the best builder in the game, allowing you to reel a target in and then re-roll any of your dice.
Then to top that off, we have Fatal Attraction, the best terrain throw in MCP. Which he can do multiple times a turn by the way! A feat that no other model has been graced with.
Magneto is here to watch the world burn. Play him if you want to choose violence and show those homo-sapiens who’s in charge.

Toad
If you’re new to the game, Toad’s strengths may not be clear upon first glance. The fact that he costs 2 threat to place on the table is his biggest strength.
You then couple that with Slippery; his signature move and an infuriating way of keeping a hold of an Extract you’ve just nabbed from Range 2 thanks to Prehensile Tongue. Toad can find a home in basically any team that is focussed on point scoring (I take him in all of my Storm games for example).
You can read a more in-depth guide for Magneto and Toadhere.

Mystique
Mystique brings another leadership style to Brotherhood of Mutants in the form of Freedom Force.
This is a bit trickier to understand the value of at first, but it enables a point scoring playstyle, with some interesting power tricks. For example, Juggernaut can move twice, pick-up an Extract, have the power refunded from the leadership and then Nothing Stops The Juggernaut himself back to safety. Mystique herself has some very interesting tech in the form of Shapeshifter. This turns off a plethora of potent abilities in the game that still catches people off guard years after her original release. Expert Sabotage also brings some guaranteed damage (which is extremely useful) and terrain destruction, making her a good pick while Magneto is in charge also.

Sabretooth
Sabretooth is 1 or 2 incarnations of this character in MCP. This one is all about mobile attrition.
A long move and Aggressive make him pretty good at chasing down his prey. No Mercy gives him a good shot at taking down an already weakened enemy and Untamed Force can really catch people off guard when he decides to attack back on your opponent's turn. Hitting the Finisher trigger on Savage Predator is brutal, especially when you also hit the Pierce and Bleed triggers on Claw Slash.
Future Purchases
So now you’re completely bought in and invested in the wonderful world of MCP…what’s next?!
Here are a couple boxes that I think are worth considering if you decide you love one of the affiliations in this Starter Set.

Xavier’s Students
This box comes with Magik, Colossus, Nightcrawler and Bishop.
They’re four characters that bring some new tricks to Uncanny X-Men.Nightcrawler and Magik can teleport around the board while Colossus and Bishop can take a bit of a beating and dish out some much needed displacement.

Juggernaut
Continuing the theme of ‘best designed characters in MCP’ - here’s Juggernaut.
He plays exactly how you would imagine…lots of smashing, pushing people around and being unstoppable. He loses his helmet on his injured side making him susceptible to enemy telepaths…he’s perfect.
Juggernaut also brings some tools that are exactly what both Magneto and Mystique need. He also does a good bit of work with the Storm leadership. He’s awesome.
Final Thoughts
So whether you’re a new player looking to get into the game…or an existing player wanting to set foot into the mutant world; you can’t really go wrong with this Starter Set.
I hope this is the start of a long and fun-filled MCP journey for you. Magneto was my very first model after all, and now look at me…bloody obsessed.
