How To Paint Everything: Trench Crusade Great Hunger

by MildNorman | Oct 24 2025

The Great Hunger is on the way, and with it are a couple of incredible sculpts from our friends at Creature Caster. Considering how different these sculpts are from the main range, we figured it'd be a good Idea to do a How To Paint article on these dudes. For more sick sculpts take a look at their FronTier here.

Gregori Gula

While this sculpt may look intimidating, it’s actually just a lot of skin and a ton of texture, so if you follow a simple base -> shade -> highlight methodology the sculpt will do most of the work for you.

Priming

We start with a base coat of GW’s Grey Seer. Any cold grey will work, but we explicitly want cool undertones for this dude so something like grey seer or pure white might be a bit off for what the end result produces. That said, I’m not your dad; do what you want.

The Skin

We’re gonna start with an all over coat of Crusader Skin. This is my go to paint when painting gross stuff, it gets a lot of warmth in the recesses but barely tints the top layer, making the skin look gross and weird.

After that we do an all over drybrush of Krieg Khaki and Elfic Flesh. This is really barely a drybrush and more of a sloppy layer. You mostly just want to avoid the recesses and make those skin folds pop. Start light and build up, you definitely don’t wanna overpower the Crusader Skin undertones.

Next up we break out the Berserker Bloodshade. This is another paint present in almost all my gross dude recipes. With this we’re gonna do a recess shade, by which I mean focus on putting it on the deepest parts of the model. As you go, use your thumb to wipe up any hard edges of wash to feather it into the top area. It's not the most elegant technique and it's not clean but you’ll get some really nice, natural, fades that way.

Lastly I used thinned Poxwalker shade paint to add some random color variations on the model. I focused on the recessed bits but really you can just apply it anywhere and use your thumb to feather it how you like. Its a diseased angel…zombie…thing there’s no way it has to look.

The Gregussy

Look I didn’t like typing that any more than you liked reading it, but here we are.

First we hit the whole thing with Murder Scene thinned with Speedpaint Medium about 50/50. This speedpaint is very strong so be careful with how you apply it.

Once it's dry (this is gonna take a while, go do a skin step or go outside while you wait), we’re gonna hit all the detailed bits in here with Pro Acryl’s Bold Titanium White. This is gonna establish a basecoat for all the contrast work we’re gonna do on these.

For the organs I used Nighthaunt Gloom and Imperial Fists Yellow in order to create some nice contrast with the red, but you can do any organ color you want here. Go nuts.

For the teeth I used Nazdreg Yellow to create some plaque and then went over that with Pale Sand to make it more tooth colored.

Lastly the bones were hit with Pallid Bone Speedpaint.

Here’s a little painting top tip: If you don't know how to highlight a color, just add Vallejo White Grey to it. This includes contrasts. I went through and hit all the raised areas with these mixtures. Trust the process here; it’s gonna look like you’re ruining the model until you finish up, but you’re adding way more detail.

The Fly

There’s a little fly in there! Hit that guy with Incubi Darkness and highlight with Thunderhawk Blue. For the eyes I honestly just grabbed a red and then a brighter red. I didn’t write down which but there’s no wrong answers here.

Matagot Hag

This gal is a touch more difficult than ol’ Greg. Don’t worry though, it largely boils down to painting a bunch of dudes.

Priming

Just like Greg, we’re gonna start with a base coat of GW’s Grey Seer. As I said above, any cold grey will work, but we explicitly want cool undertones for this dude so something like grey seer or pure white might be a bit off for what the end result produces.

“Clean” Skin

Just like Greg we’re gonna start with Crusader Skin. Apply heavily and all over. Make sure you hit all the nooks and crannies, it's really easy to miss a spot.

We’re then gonna do a heavy drybrush with Vallejo’s Warm Grey. This is another all timer paint, I use it in a lot of my weirdo skin recipes.

Hit all the recesses with Berzerker Bloodshade and Nighthaunt Gloom to represent inflammation and bruising. If you wanna ratchet up the grossness also hit these areas with a gloss varnish to make them also look like sweat is collecting there.

After you do the rest of the details (the gross bits, rope, etcetera) go through with a mix of Vallejo Warm Grey and White Grey and highlight all the raised edges of the model. This will be one of the last steps you do, so use this step to clean up.

Gross Skin

We’re gonna paint any areas that we want to be covered in blood and gore with Sigvald Burgundy. Be careful with this paint, as it's VERY strong and will absolutely cover anything it touches.

Mix Sigvald Burgundy with Vallejo White Grey for highlights on the icky parts, then hit the whole thing with Blood for the Blood God, mixing in Gorgon Brown for the deepest parts of the gore.

Odds and Ends

For the hair, that's just the base grey seer, hit with Nuln Oil, and highlight with Vallejo White Grey.

For the Metal we’re gonna hit the whole thing with Iron Warriors then take your worst most destroyed brush and stipple (fast stabbing motions) Vallejo Silver on the raised areas. For the rust, hit the decayed parts with Gorgon Brown, and hit the inside of the brown with Trollslayer Orange

For the Rope, that’s just Sand Golem Speedpaint. Honestly, didn’t see the need to highlight it.

Lastly the goop from the chalice up top is just Plaguebearer Contrast. You may need a few coats to get it to the tone you want.

And that's it! Your forces are ready to assault the nearest fast food place to try and fill their bellies. You can get your hands on these models via the Creature Caster Frontier.
