Contemptor Kevin's Combat Patrol Issue #47 Review

by Kevin Stillman | Apr 13 2026

Welcome back, Combat Patrolers, to another week of our Combat Patrol review.  This time we're looking at issue #47, which is Part 1 of 2 for the Ork Deffkoptas.  What sort of value are we looking at this week, and is this an issue you may be interested in right now in the lead-up to 11th Edition and the Armageddon extravaganza?  Let's find out!

As always, thank you to Goonhammer and Hachette for the opportunity to review these models, magazines, and materials.

Narrative Materials

This issue does not have any narrative materials, except for some discussion as to what Deffkoptas are and the opportunity to roll to determine your Deffkopta's personality: Do they like to weave while they fly, do they like to have louder and rattle-ier engines, or do they have blunt rotor blades to knock enemies when they get with their rotor blades.

This last history strikes me as someone silly: If you get hit by a rotor blade, even in the Grim Darkness of the Far Future, you're likely to be chopped into mincemeat.  Except if you're wearing Terminator or Gravis armor (which wound on a 4+ or a 5+, respectively).  The instructions (discussed below) also sneak in a small discussion of the Deffkopta loadouts and what they do (Kustom Mega-Blasta fires gouts of destructive energy, while Rokkits rain down from the sky).  But as for the normal set of 40K information or short stories, none of that.

Hobby Materials

This issue offers plenty of hobby materials, however!  We get two of the three Deffkoptas (the third is in next week's issue along with the bases), and a painting guide for how to edge highlight Orks and Chaos Space Marines with Knight Questor Flesh, Calgar Blue and Stormhost Silver.

The painting guide is helpful, pointing out various bits on the CSM models where they believe the highlights should go.  The Calgar Blue is used to highlight the blacks and the blues on both Orks and Marines (both armor and leather), though they suggest treating the paint differently for the leather.  This is a good tip, as I believe it would give a slightly different look to the leather than the armor highlights.  The metallics all get Stormhost Silver, and the brown leather and fur get highlights of Knight-Questor Flesh.

The Deffkopta Sprues we get in this issue build two complete Deffkoptas, though we do not have a base for them.  This issue builds the two "regular" Koptas, while the KMB Kopta is in next week's issue.  These models go together pretty well, as they're in roughly the same number and style of parts: two halves of the 'Kopta, Ork Head, two arms, two legs, the occassional extra bit, and then the rotors.  They also have sculpted hero branches/rubble that goes into a sculpted base topper.  These particular bits are more industrial than the equivalents that the Space Marines currently have, and so for one of the Deffkoptas I kept it.  The other hero branch was a dead tree branch, and so I cut that off and replaced it with a factory column from the Sector Mechanicus bases kit, so that I can use it with some Sector Mechanicus-style bases that I own.

Gaming Materials

We get the datasheet for the Deffkoptas, along with a promise that next week we'll have a scenario to play around with the "Fly" and "Deep Strike" keywords on the datasheet.  The rest of the gaming materials are Enhancements, Secondary Objectives, and Stratagems for the Chaos Space Marines Combat Patrol.

The Final Verdict

I'm new to the WAAAGH!!! as a playable army for me, because in the past I've just had the contents of the Pandemic Era "Prophecy of the Wolf" box set before starting in earnest on Orks as one of the apparently four armies I'm working on in 2026 (1).  Deffkoptas feel like a handy tool to have around in the event the upcoming Ork Codex for 11th makes them into good units for the new edition and it's objective based-shenanigans.  They're also cheap as chips in this format.  If you wanted multiple units of Deffkoptas, two sets of Issues 47 and 48 have an MSRP of $60 and a box of 3 Deffkoptas from GW runs $69, so this is very much a nicer value.

Until next time, Combat Patrolers.

(1) Ultramarines, Orks, Ossiarch Bonereapers, and Starcraft Terrans, in case you're wondering.
