Contemptor Kevin's 2021 in review

by Kevin Stillman | Dec 28 2021

Whoo-boy. After spending the better part of the year under some form of isolation, I was burned out at the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021. Plus, I had hosted Christmas lunch/dinner amongst my "pod" and had to put away all my hobby stuff in favor of various meats.

But after a couple of weeks of, rest, recuperation, and when my dog was out of the house for a couple of days undergoing a medical procedure (1), I was able to get back into the groove. During Salsa's operation, I was contacted by my vet and told they wanted to take a couple of her baby teeth out to let her mature teeth grow in. Since she was very much in a bitey-phase at the time, I readily agreed - but asked them to save the teeth. This was the kick in the pants I needed, I decided to start my 2021 hobbying by painting Ghazkull Mag Uruk Thracka, my first ever Ork model.

My big hobby achievements in 2021 were:

  1. Getting featured on the Warhammer TV Hobby Round-Up with my Uriel Ventris and Primaris Lieutenants

  2. Playing in the NoLA Warhammer Open and getting sent to the paint spotlight

  1. Winning a game at a competitive event!

  2. Getting to hang out with my Goonhammer friends in New Orleans

  3. Winning a Warhammer trivia competition at New Orleans

  4. Getting a box set completely built and primed (if not, you know, finished).

  5. Painting a miniature at an event, and having it look fantastic!

  6. Experimenting with new painting techniques, and having results that looked amazing.

  7. Returning to events and the "nerd summer camp" feel

  8. Finishing two Primarchs

My hobby goals for 2022 are:

  1. Finish my Ultramarines Second Company (having 99-101 non-character models painted in the Blue and Gold of the Second Company. I'm at 90 right now)

  2. Finish more of my backlog by adding in some more units to my Space Wolves army in preparation for the LVO and Adepticon. This includes magnetizing all of their bases

  3. Build and finish the box sets I purchased in 2020 and 2021

  4. Find a place to put all of my finished models for display.

Right now, we are in a rather exciting time in this hobby. The hobby has never been more visible - and the techniques proliferating in the Community (be it via Goonhammer's website and discord; YouTube, Warhammer+, etc.) have never been easier to access. Here's to 2021, and the hope of an even more exciting 2022!
